While the two disciples who had returned from Emmaus were telling of the Lord they had met on the road, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of those who were gathered. Until a moment before, the disciples had been sharing the news that the Lord had indeed risen, but when the Lord actually appeared, they were terrified and frightened and thought they were seeing a spirit. There was still a distance between speaking of the news of the resurrection and believing in the actual resurrection. The Lord proclaimed peace to the frightened disciples, showed them His hands and feet and let them touch Him, and ate food before them.
