The passage we read today is the scene in which Jesus, having received the death sentence from Pilate, goes to Calvary. Jesus had been scourged with forty stripes minus one, and His whole body was exhausted. When He collapsed from exhaustion while going up to Calvary bearing the cross, the people laid hold of a Cyrenian named Simon, laid the cross on him, and made him follow Jesus. Many women followed Jesus, beating their breasts and weeping. At this time Jesus spoke. He said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children” (Luke 23:28).
